The money is yours; the decisions need a clear trail
A member can care about retirement returns and still object to funding weapons, gambling, fossil fuels or other activities. The useful first question is which investment option holds what, on which date, under which rules. A marketing label cannot answer all of that. This room concerns investment transparency and member control; using super for a house deposit has its own room.
Start with the actual holdings
AustralianSuper provides searchable holdings and option-specific downloads, currently labelled 30 June 2026. Its disclosure page says it publishes twice yearly, within 90 days of the reporting dates. That is a dated snapshot, not a live account of today’s portfolio.
The fund also explains that small exposures can round to 0.00%, some recently sold positions can appear at zero dollars, and derivatives need different interpretation from shares. Record the exact option, asset type, issuer, value, reporting date and any look-through information. A fund-wide list alone does not establish exposure in your own option.
Does my super invest in weapons?
A named allegation needs a named holding and evidence of what the issuer makes. Start with the fund’s dated record, then the company’s own business disclosures: distinguish weapons manufacture, components, civilian products and broader military contracting. A company name or social-media list alone does not settle the exposure.
Ask about direct shares, bonds and exposure through pooled funds or index products. A pooled-fund entry may require another layer of holdings to identify the underlying companies; do not count both layers as separate exposure. Ask which underlying holdings are available and which remain unknown. This page does not assert that a named fund currently holds a weapons manufacturer.
What does the ethical label actually exclude?
Moneysmart distinguishes exclusions, revenue thresholds, ESG risk assessment and shareholder engagement. They do different jobs. A screen covering controversial weapons is not automatically a ban on all military suppliers: read the definition, threshold, indirect-exposure rules and exceptions for the particular option.
For stewardship, ask how the fund voted, what change it sought and what happened. Holding a company while trying to influence it is a different choice from selling it. A glossy statement of values is not the same as a record of either action.
Choice, fees and control
Choosing a fund or investment option is different from choosing every underlying security. Some products offer a wider investment menu; others pool decisions. Moneysmart describes these different levels of choice and the responsibility that comes with them.
Compare the actual fee schedule, insurance, services, risk and performance over matching periods. Administration and investment fees, transaction costs and any switching charges can affect the comparison. Greater control can bring more work and cost; an ethical label does not remove investment risk. This is a public-policy discussion, not a recommendation to switch funds or buy an investment.
Different reforms, different tradeoffs
Make existing disclosures usableSearchable option-level holdings, stable identifiers and explained unknowns make comparisons easier without forcing a change of investment strategy; reporting costs and sensitive valuations still need handling.
Give members clearer exclusion choicesPlain definitions and visible exceptions let members express priorities; narrower portfolios can alter costs, diversification and returns.
Make stewardship answerablePublish votes, milestones and escalation decisions so members can judge influence in practice; engagement may be slow or fail.
Expand member voice and controlMember questions, consultation and optional investment choices can make trustees more answerable; popularity alone does not establish a prudent investment, and complex menus can overwhelm people.
Put a question on the record
Ask your fund: which option am I in; where is its latest complete holdings file; what indirect exposure is disclosed; and what does your weapons screen actually cover? Request a written answer with the policy date and relevant clause. Keep account numbers and identity documents out of public posts.
A member meeting or the fund’s complaints process can provide a route for questions. For wider reform, ask representatives for clearer disclosure standards and member participation, using a redacted example of a question the current records could not answer. State what is missing rather than treating uncertainty as proof of misconduct.
Status and sources
Checked 3 October 2026. The linked fund page is an example of a disclosure source, not an endorsement. Holdings and investment rules change; keep the reporting date attached to every claim. These reform options are for public discussion, not an adopted party platform.
